Projects:
Providing Strategic Vision and UX Definition for a Professional Organization's Digital Transformations
2019-20
The Challenge:
A storied professional association with over fifty years of industry leadership and global reach was in dire need of digital transformation. To meet the needs of new generation of professionals and emerging market opportunities, the business needed to put forward a new vision accompanied by a modern digital experience.

The Solution:
As a strategic digital transformation effort, this went far beyond the requirements of a redesign effort. Starting with a discovery phase that utilized a range of primary and secondary research method including stakeholder workshops, user interviews, and survey data analysis, users were identified. Formulating a communications, content, and systems strategy for addressing the key user's needs came next, along with synthesizing all of the moving parts into a vision for a user experience and customer experience that would fulfill the organizational vision and meet all user needs.

Projects:
A Digital Product Strategy for Creating Operational Visibility and Connecting Business
2019
The Challenge:
A global appliance manufacturer needed to create a better channel for sales, communication, and service with its residential dealers. They needed to understand their target users better as well as to craft a vision for a path forward in meeting those user's needs. The goal was to create an evidence-based vision for how the business interacted with dealers, and subsequently enhance their ability to sell and serve their customers.

The Solution:
The journey began with an effort to understand and align the strategic vision of stakeholders. Working both in-person and virtually across multiple locations I led a team in planning and conducting a series of workshops that endeavored to identify and achieve consensus on high level goals, users, and what success would look like. We then set out to understand users through a range of ethnographic research methods. We first inquired about their business, the current state, and their needs, goals, and challenges. This was followed by more focused early prototype testing to gauge the utility and desirability of specific functions and content for a potential application. The research and subsequent insights informed the vision for how the business connected with dealers. Following reporting on the research, the deliverables included personas, user journeys, and interactive prototypes.

Defining Strategic Direction and Resolving Complexity in Constructing an Enterprise Application Experience
2018
The Challenge:
A complex business environment with a diverse group of stakeholders required alignment in design and product requirements. This was followed by an immediate need to carry and continue this alignment in translating requirements to design.
The Solution:
Engaging directly with stakeholders to gain consensus and alignment on product and design, I facilitated workshops to ensure key decision makers approval and buy-in as well as other stakeholder concerns, goals, and vision. In execution, I led an international design team and worked with multiple product owners as well as a multi-disciplinary agile team to design and develop product according to established and evolving requrirments.

Projects:
Understanding Users and Defining UX Strategy for a Better Digital Healthcare Workplace
2016
The Challenge:
A hospital network with over 25K employees had an outdated, fragmented intranet that needed a comprehensive update to serve as an authoritative and mobile friendly delivery channel for corporate communications, policy and procedure, organization services, and collaboration workspaces.
The Solution:
I led the design team in a discovery process that engaged stakeholders for their goals and vision. A research plan engaged a broad range of users in 1:1 and group interviews as well as a deep analysis of organizational structure and operations. Insights drawn from this process were translated into information architecture, content strategy, and wireframe prototypes. Finally, visual design, style guides, and publishing governance were carried out to complete a set of assets ready to build out a fully responsive, scalable, and user-centered digital workplace.

FinTech Product Design for a New Market
2018
The Challenge
A financial technology company that had traditionally focused on advanced day-traders wanted to create a service that would appeal to casual traders and novice investors.
The Solution
Given a tight timeline, I led a team in an abbreviated guerrilla research effort that segued quickly into sketching and concept development. Jumping right into product design, several mobile-native app concepts were designed that centered around the notions of automation, education, and play in a highly intuitive and easy to use app context.

A Furniture Retailer’s Long Awaited Foray into ecommerce
2013
The Challenge
One of the largest brick and mortar furniture retailers in the U.S. wanted to build an ecommerce platform. Our team was preceded by a trail of failed efforts and fired agencies due to organizational and business challenges.
The Solution
Through a series of design thinking workshops with executive stakeholders, we drew a laser-focus on their vision, goals, and business landscape. We conceived, designed, and built an eCommerce platform that offered a great shopping experience. Despite some steep business logistics challenges, the outcome was a highly visual, inspirational, and usable online store that made shopping for the home a pleasurable experience.

Projects:
Making Analytics Authoritative, Discoverable, and Usable
2017
The Challenge
An energy commodities firm that relied on analytics to inform their business decisions had issues with the location, authority, and discoverability of their data.

The Solution
We set out by engaging the client in discovery to understand their goals, vision and the current state. We spoke to stakeholders and a wide range of users to understand their needs, behaviors, and perceptions. All of this inquiry led to the concept of a “Center of Excellence’ for analytics where users could not only easily find authoritative information, but they could also get training and crowd source queries to various communities within the organization. It manifested as a responsive web design that sat upon a single analytics platform, allowing mobile access, high performance, and consolidated data.

Amplifying Corporate Communications through Gamification
2017
The Challenge
A C-level executive for a global manufacturing firm wanted to approach their annual address in a new way that would increase employee engagement and ensure the embrace of its principles.
The Solution
Leading a design team in this effort required the exploration of how employees received and used corporate communications. Given a highly competitive, high-achieving audience, the channel we chose was a mobile app that progressively disclosed the communication, enriched the message with additional content, and “gamified” usage to encourage a broad range of user actions against the content.

Increasing Employee Engagement and Productivity Globally
2017
The Challenge
With a massive global workforce, recent acquisitions, and fragmented IT systems, a global agricultural organization was ill equipped to engage its employees, deliver consistent corporate communications, and deliver critical functions. That's were we came in.
The Solution
Working directly with the client corporate communications team, I led an effort to understand the organization as a whole and worked to construct a body of knowledge about the prospective users of a global intranet and digital workspace. Following a series of workshops and primary research effort, I designed an experience that allowed for a brand consistent delivery of communications and functions, as well as a personal, customizable, and localizable channel and workplace through which employee coule engage the organization, each other, and their work.

PLACETALK: Enabling the Vision Impaired Person’s Understanding of Spaces
2011
The Challenge
As a personal research project, I conducted a deep dive into how people with vision impairment experience public spaces, asking the basic question of how that experience could be improved.
The Solution
The inquiry centered on public spaces that present objects or features of interest that in most case, can only be understood visually. This included exhibit spaces, museums, and buildings with notable architectural elements. The concept combined geo-tagging and physical optical tagging with crowd-sourced verbal descriptions. Following interviews with many vision impaired persons and review of literature on wayfinding and spatial description semantics, I contacted leading researcher in technology related to distance scanning using smartphones. The concept’s technical elements are rooted in 2011, but the fundamental concept persists.
